The ancient Romans were some of the first to widely use peppermint and brought it with them to England, where it was commercially planted around the 1750s in Mitchum, Surrey, South London. The English peppermint cultivar was brought to the United States around the 1790s and was known as "Black mint" or "Mitchum mint". Dried peppermint is made up of the following essential oils & aromatic compounds in order of amount; menthol, menthone, menthyl acetate, menthofuran, and cineol, as well as small quantities of limonene, pulegone, eucalyptol, caryophyllene, and pinene. Menthol activates cold and menthol-sensitive receptors in the skin and mucosal tissues, producing peppermint's trademark cooling feeling, Peppermint has also been said to enhance memory.
